Trump’s Call to Ban Flag-Burning Would Ironically Stifle the Freedom the Flag Represents
Trump: "Now, people will say, Oh, it's unconstitutional. Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that."
Donald Trump recently made headlines with his call for a one-year jail sentence for anyone who desecrates the American flag. Speaking on Fox News, he asserted, "I think you should get a one-year jail sentence if you do anything to desecrate the American flag. Now, people will say, Oh, it's unconstitutional. Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that. We have to work in Congress to get a one-year jail sentence. When they're allowed to stomp on the flag, put lighter fluid on the flag, and set it on fire. When you’re allowed to do that, you get a one-year jail sentence, and you'll never see it again.”
Now, let’s get one thing straight. I love this country and everything the flag represents. But Trump's suggestion to imprison flag burners is a dangerous step away from the very principles that flag stands for. The First Amendment exists to protect our right to dissent, even when that dissent takes forms we might find deeply offensive.
The Founding Fathers understood the importance of safeguarding free speech, especially speech that criticizes the government. They knew that a free society must allow its citizens to express unpopular opinions, even if those opinions are expressed in ways that make our blood boil. If we start locking people up for burning the flag, we open the door to silencing all sorts of dissenting voices. And once we start down that slippery slope, it's a short trip to totalitarianism.
It's ironic, isn't it? The very people Trump is targeting with this proposed law are exercising the freedom that flag symbolizes. Yes, it’s infuriating to see our flag desecrated. But freedom isn’t about protecting speech we agree with; it’s about protecting speech we hate. If we only allow speech that aligns with our views, we are no better than the leftists who use censorship to silence their critics.
We should remember that the Supreme Court has already weighed in on this issue. In 1989, in Texas v. Johnson, the Court ruled that flag burning is protected speech under the First Amendment. Justice William Brennan wrote for the majority, stating, “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.”
But let's not get this twisted: if protesters break the law during their demonstrations—vandalizing property, assaulting people, or inciting riots—they should absolutely face the consequences. Law and order must be maintained. However, criminalizing the act of flag burning itself, a form of political expression, is not the way to go. We should be focusing on upholding the law, not undermining the Constitution.
Our nation was built on the right to challenge authority, to hold our leaders accountable, and to push for change. The American flag stands for these freedoms, and we dishonor it by attempting to stifle free speech. Instead of jailing flag burners, let's engage in civil discourse and demonstrate why their actions are misguided. Let's lead by example and show that true patriotism includes defending the rights of all Americans, even those we disagree with.
Trump's call for imprisoning flag burners is misguided and unconstitutional. We must remember that the strength of our nation lies in our commitment to freedom, even when that freedom is exercised in ways that anger us. The solution is not to silence dissent but to address it with reasoned arguments and unwavering support for the principles that make America truly great. Let's not betray the Constitution in a misguided effort to protect it.

Old Glory represents the United States of America that has created, arguably, the most enslaved nation in existence today, and that is responsible for all but destroying America.
That's right - America and the United States of America (aka the Constitutional Republic) are NOT the same thing! Not even close.
In fact, early 1600's Puritan America whose governments of, by, and for God were established upon the Bible's immutable/unchanging moral law was sacrificed on the altar of the late 1700s Enlightenment United States of America whose humanistic government of, by, and for the people was established upon capricious man-made traditions (aka the biblically seditious Constitution).
The latter is also known as the Grand Experiment in Self Government. Self-government!?! Gee, what could go wrong? Everything, just open your eyes and look around you. Everything gone wrong in America nationally is the consequence of this monumental case of biblical sedition committed by the 1787 cadre of Enlightenment and Masonic theistic rationalists.
Thus, ours is not to save the United States of America but, Lord willing, to restore America.
